Smiski: Commuter Series

Experiential Product Launch

Background: Small, cute, and affectionately existentialist: Smiski are popular collectible figurines which hide in the corners of rooms, performing tasks with detached thousand-yard stares. In this new series, Smiski are on their way to work. They’re running to the subway, they’re stuck in traffic, they’ve just dropped their morning coffee while trying to catch the next train.

Insight: We’ve all had that Sisyphusian feeling, at some point or another, that we’re just pushing a boulder up a hill. Our commutes can be tedious and uncomfortable; our jobs, a repetitive means to an end. But when those feelings bubble up, we can at least be comforted by the fact that everyone is going through the same thing. There’s a bit of solace in the shared experience.

Idea: Typically, Smiski carry out their scenes in the comfort of your home, but in this campaign, they will be commuting alongside the rest of us. Taking inspiration from the sculptures series Life Underground by Tom Otherness for the New York 6th Avenue subway station, Smiski will be permanently fixed in public transit areas—underneath a stairwell, on the back of a bus stop bench. Banners advertising the series will have QR codes, directing people to online stores. Smiski are taking part in this shared experience. They’re just trying their best to make it through the day.
